sharks

So here we are…
The demons of last year were vanquished Saturday night in Colorado. Dan Boyle and Joe Pavelski led us to victory with game-tying and –winning goals, respectively, and the Sharks managed to “overcome” a 2-1 deficit to win the first round series. Jesus Christ. An audible sigh of relief washed over the bay and Sharks fans everywhere grinned sheepishly and patted each other on the back, not wanting to appear too excited about what should have taken less than six games, and a little embarrassed for entertaining such strong doubts that we would avoid shameful defeat. And that’s really what the opening series is all about for San Jose. To me the first round this year contained less a desire for glory than a fear of humiliation. Sure we wanted to win, but we really didn’t want to lose.
And thanks to a key group of guys, many of whom are new faces this year (reaffirming Doug Wilson’s status as the best GM in the league), we did not lose. Here are a few thoughts on who I think deserves credit for the Sharks moving on to the next round. Number one: Joe Pavelski. My nigga. This guy has been the backbone of the team so far, coming through in just about every clutch situation imaginable. He looks hungry (perhaps a candidate for captain when Blake retires?) and his line has led the Sharks in scoring by a wide margin. Ryan Clowe has also been killing it. His work along the boards was phenomenal, and he’s remained disciplined, avoiding dumb penalties. Scotty Nichol. He goes hard every single shift, hits everything in sight, and boosts the energy on the forecheck. He also gets down in the face-off circle. Manny Malhotra, another face-off beast, has been huge on special teams. He and Mitchell added much needed speed to match Colorado’s noticeable advantage in quickness. Dan Boyle is going to carry this team through the second round on his back if he has to. Setoguchi has had a great series as well, surprisingly, as his regular season was less than impressive. He’s managed to simplify his game, pick up the pace and finish checks, which has paid off.
Mostly I’m relieved, but anxiety over the next round is already starting to creep in. Our top line has been weak, particularly Marleau, despite scoring the one goal they have between them. If they don’t start putting up points we won’t be able to compete with teams like the blackhawks and the red wings. HOWEVER, the rest of the team, specifically those I mentioned, did manage to prove that we are indeed a different team this year, and if everyone else (i.e. our “star” players: Thornton, Marleau, etc) gets with the program, we might actually (do I dare say it?) be able to… (bad idea, don’t do it)…make a run for the cup. That’s right. The sharks, while saving their fans from the indignity of another first round defeat, also, inadvertently, gave us hope. And right now, still riding high off such a recent victory (and also a king-sized spliff), I am painfully hopeful. Don’t let us down. Go sharks.
